Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand’s Scenic Beauty

New Zeland

Lake Wakatipu has no legends of prehistoric monsters or anything like it, but many similarities are geographical and landscapes are like the famous Loch Ness in Scotland.

The similarity comes to the point that the lake was chosen as a location for films that simulate the famous Scottish lake as “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep”. Beyond anecdotal evidence, the lake is a beautiful tourist destination in New Zealand. Located in the South Island, the lake stretches about 80 miles being the longest in the country and the third largest. Amid a landscape of mountain, near the Southern Alps, Lake Wakatipu is very deep, even some 100 meters below sea level.

The area is of great scenic beauty, surrounded by mountains, including the Remarkables mountain range, being a place for adventure tourism, with all sorts of outdoor activities. It is one of the interior landscapes of New Zealand’s most photographed of the South Island and also is near the town of Queenstown, that you can walk through. Other cities on its banks are Glenorchy and Kingston.

The whole area is accessible from State high way 6, one of the longest roads in New Zealand, which is located at the foot of the Remarkable mountains and along the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

In addition to activities on the lake in winter, the mountainous area has skiing and other winter activities. There are also designated areas for camping and numerous hiking trails between valleys and picturesque vineyards.
